1. Guidelines for Safe Medication for Colds During Pregnancy

Antipyretic Analgesic Drugs:

Paracetamol (paracetamol) is a Class B drug during pregnancy and can be used to relieve pain and reduce fever symptoms throughout pregnancy. It is relatively safe to use during pregnancy preparation.

nAntihistamines:

  • First-generation antihistamines such as chlorpheniramine (chlorpheniramine maleate) are Class B drugs and should be used with caution by pregnant women.

  • Second-generation antihistamines such as loratadine are also Class B drugs and are safe to use during pregnancy.

nDecongestant:

Pseudoephedrine is a Class C drug. Currently, there are no sufficient case reports and reliable controlled studies on its impact on human fetuses. Moreover, this drug can pass through the blood-fetal barrier and occur in the first trimester.

and the second trimester should be prohibited.

nAntitussive medicine:

  • Codeine is a Class C drug that easily crosses the blood-fetal barrier and is not recommended.

  • Dextromethorphan is also a Class C drug and is prohibited during the first 3 months of pregnancy.

nChinese patent medicine:

If you develop a cold during pregnancy preparation, you can consider taking proprietary Chinese medicines such as Ganmao Qingre Granules. Such drugs have relatively little impact on pregnancy preparation.

2. Precautions

During pregnancy preparation, if the symptoms of the cold are not serious, it is recommended to avoid the use of medicines as much as possible. The symptoms can be alleviated through diet therapy and maintaining good living habits.

If drugs must be used, drugs that are harmless or have less impact on the fetus should be selected and used under the professional guidance of a doctor.

Certain drugs such as aspirin, diphenhydramine, chlorpheniramine, carbosteine, codeine, etc. are listed as contraindicated drugs and should be avoided.
